This guide, included as part of the Oak Meadow Grade 1, is intended for parents and home teachers as they work with their students through the largely self-directed music lessons in Grade 1 Coursebook. Beginning with a simple and user-friendly introduction to the elements of a piece of sheet music such as the staff and the measure, the guide then presents the recorder, how to hold it, and how to play specific notes on it. Notes are introduced gently one at a time, with simple exercises to familiarize you and your student with the instrument and the notes. The book ends with a series of brief, familiar tunes using only the notes you have learned. Beginning Recorder is a delightful introduction to both the craft and the joy of music.
The type of recorder we recommend is a soprano recorder with Baroque fingering. For more advice on getting started, read Tips for Playing the Recorder on our blog.
- Listen and play along! To assist you in your exploration of the recorder, we provide music recordings for each of the songs included in our Recorder Songbooks here.
